THE LANDFILL PROJECT

Queens, NY

2018
Type: Visioning, Community Engagement
Community partner: RISE Center
Supported by: Pratt Center for Community Development

A community visioning process to imagine the future of a decommissioned municipal landfill located within an ecologically and socially significant area. Carried out in partnership with a local youth organization.

Edgemere Landfill located in Jamaica Bay in New York is capped and facing an undetermined future. We partnered with a local organization, RISE [Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity] to develop a framework for a future vision of the site. Through a series of workshops, walks, and exhibits, The Landfill Project engaged experts, residents and youth in identifying priorities for the site based on the four key areas of flood resiliency, energy production, environmental conservation and recreation.

This project is a collaboration between Alejandra Gomez Bolivar, Simon Kates, Elliott Maltby, Martha Wilson and Ruyun Xiao.
